If you’ve got an idea for a product but aren’t quite sure how to get it created, then you’re in the right place!
In this article, I am going to show you exactly how to find a supplier to manufacture your product for you, and all you will need to do is coordinate the process from the comfort of your own home!
Before I built my own brand of products, I thought that every product I ever bought was designed and manufactured from the exact same company that I was buying it from. But once I learned the secrets of how most brands are built, I never looked at products the same way again.
There are tens of thousands of manufactures in the world, whose sole purpose is to develop and manufacture products, and most of them want nothing to do with the actual selling of these products to consumers.
The business model of most manufactures is to produce products in large quantities and sell them directly to other businesses. Businesses who will put their own brand name and logo on them and then sell those products to consumers, just as if they’d manufactured them themselves.
This was an eye-opening revelation for me, especially when I realized that it could be me buying these products and building my own brand with them!
With technology today, it’s easier than ever to find a manufacturer, and I am going to show you exactly how to do it using a site called Alibaba, along with another one that you’ve probably heard of, Google.
Then, once you find a supplier, I am going to give you some tips on communicating with them along with a checklist to ensure you are asking the right questions when reaching out initially.
Finally, I’m going to let you in on the easiest, fastest, and safest way to have your product shipped directly to Amazon, without you ever having to physically handle the product.
Alibaba is hands down the best place to source physical products. Unless you are looking for supplements or skincare products, chances are you can start your search right here. I’ll get to where you can find suppliers for those other types of products in a minute, but first, let’s go ahead and open up Alibaba.
Next, type the main keyword of the product you want to find a supplier for in the search bar at the top, which should result in thousands of suppliers, along with their products popping up.
In order to narrow down our choices and limit our results to only the best, most trusted suppliers, we’ll use a few of Alibaba’s filters. I like to use “Trade Assurance Suppliers” and “Gold Suppliers” to narrow down my search results.
In most cases, just by using these two search criteria, 90% of the results will be eliminated, leaving you with only the best suppliers and products, and a much more manageable list to choose from!
From this list, we simply want to find the search results that best match the product that we are looking for. We also want to make sure that the supplier’s terms, such as price and minimum order quantity, make sense for us.
Some other things to look for are how long the supplier has been in business, and their star rating (if they have one). We want to find reputable suppliers who have ideally been in business for 3 or more years and who have good reviews.
It is not uncommon to find multiple suppliers with similar products, prices, and MOQs, so it is crucial that we compile a list of potential suppliers and contact each one to get more information.
A few things to clarify with your supplier:
- Price for the product at different MOQs
- How long it will take to make the product
- If the product is customizable
- If they offer samples
Alibaba makes it super easy to reach out to suppliers.
To do so, simply scroll down to the bottom of the screen, and their contact info should pop right up.
If you can’t find the product that you are looking for from Alibaba, chances are it’s a supplement or skincare product that may be better off sourced from the United States.
To find these types of products, you can simply do a Google search using the terms “Private Label” along with the product you’re looking for.
For example, if we were looking to sell face cream, we would do a Google search for “Private Label Face Cream”.
As you can see, there are all kinds of different companies specializing in private labeling these types of products!
Once you find a supplier, you will need to figure out how to ship the products from your supplier’s factory to one of Amazon’s fulfilment warehouses.
To do this there are 2 options:
One way is to ask your suppler if they will ship the product for you, and to include the shipping price in their quote to you. If you’re going to go with this option, it’s important to make sure that your supplier has done it before and is familiar with Amazon’s requirements for receiving products.
Alternatively, the safest and best way that I’ve found, is to use a certain type of company called a freight forwarder. These companies specialize in shipping products all over the world, and are incredibly familiar with importing, export, and any specific requirements that Amazon may have for receiving shipments.
To find one, you can simply do a Google search for “freight forwarder” and a bunch will pop up. Send out an email to a few companies briefing describing your situation, and odds are, they’ll get back to you within a few business days!
You now know how to find a supplier to create your product and how to get that product shipped to one of Amazon’s warehouses.
It’s time to start reaching out to suppliers until you find one that meets all of your requirements, and when you find one the you are comfortable working with, go ahead and get the manufacturing process started!
